When you’re looking for mental health treatment, you’ll find an array of options. Would you benefit most from inpatient mental health treatment in Seattle? Do you need to find IOP depression treatment near you instead? What’s the difference between residential treatment, and a PHP?

We’ve developed a guide to help you weigh your options so you can find mental health treatment that considers your specific goals, life circumstances, and mental health needs.

What are the different types of mental health treatment centers?

Residential, PHP, and IOP mental health treatment programs

Residential mental health treatment

In residential mental health treatment, patients live where they’re receiving treatment, giving them access to 24/7 support. Residential treatment allows for very focused mental health support because patients are involved in different aspects of mental health treatment throughout their day like group therapy, individual therapy, and holistic supports like mindfulness and art therapy, plus nutrition support and medication management.

Residential programs are a great option for beginning a new treatment plan, for people with complex mental health concerns, for people who need help stabilizing while in crisis, for people with long-term mental health considerations that have been treatment-resistant, and for people who are in danger of harming themselves.

Partial hospitalization programs

PHPs are a compromise between residential treatment and outpatient treatment; patients live at home, but they attend a full-day mental health treatment program each day of the week. PHPs include holistic mental health treatment that is similar to what is offered in residential treatment, allowing for close focus on treatment while also maintaining connections to home. It can be a nice balance for people with less severe mental health concerns or for people leaving a residential program who still want substantial ongoing support.

Intensive outpatient programs

IOPs are more robust than a once-weekly therapy session, and they are often at least three to five days a week of therapy, but they are usually only for half the day or a couple hours at a time. They often include similar therapy components to a PHP, such as group therapy and individual therapy, but they allow patients to spend most of their day in their typical life routines. IOPs are an excellent choice for stepping down from residential or PHP programs, so you can re-engage with work, school, friends, family, and all parts of daily life, while also maintaining strong mental health support.

Gender-specific mental health treatment centers

While there is nothing wrong with gender-nonspecific mental health treatment, there can be advantages to gender-specific treatment. At THIRA Health, girls, women, and gender expansive individuals are welcomed for treatment. These groups share certain social pressures, behavioral norms, and personal challenges that can directly impact their mental health. It can also feel safer to be in a group with your own gender and can reduce negative social interactions between patients in gender-specific mental health treatment.

Different genders also often, but not always, have higher risk factors for specific mental health disorders, allowing gender-specific treatments to be more targeted in treatment approaches. Overall, gender-specific treatment can create a more cohesive, immediately useful mental health treatment program for patients.

Age-specific mental health programs

When you’re in an intensive mental health treatment program like a residential treatment program, or an intensive outpatient program (IOP), it can be helpful to be in a community with patients who are your age. Having the common ground of the same life stresses and similar experiences can help bring you closer together, making group therapy more effective.

When you share your successes and healthy coping mechanisms, they’re likely to be informed by where you are in life and how you experience the world. This can be more relatable to other patients who are the same age, and potentially more helpful, because of similar experiences and life stages. Treatment plans can also cover similar goals/life stage guidance for all patients in an age-specific program, meaning patients can focus on learning similar things and supporting each other in that learning.

Mental health condition-specific treatment programs

When seeking mental health treatment, knowing that your treatment program is specifically set up to help you with your particular mental health conditions can make a treatment program much more appealing, and often more effective. When there’s a group therapy component, like in DBT programs, it can also help you relate more easily to fellow patients, increasing your sense of belonging and community.

Condition-specific treatment programs can help with:

• • Eating disorders
  • Depression, including treatment-resistant depression
  • Self-harm and suicidal urges
  • Anxiety
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Psychosis and schizophrenia

Different therapy modalities in mental health treatment centers

Mental health treatment centers will often focus on one, or a few, complimentary therapy modalities to support their patients. Finding a therapy modality that suits your personality and provides care that includes both practical solutions and in-depth treatment of personal struggles is important. Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, can be one such modality that offers broad support. DBT includes individual therapy to help with long-term healing, group therapy to practice DBT skills, and on-call therapist support when life gets tough. It offers you a multitude of life skills to practice and employ for better emotional regulation, increased distress tolerance, staying present and mindful of the current moment, and improved interpersonal interactions. It is a holistic, practical, and flexible treatment program; all worthwhile mental health treatment centers should aim for modalities that provide a similar high standard of care.

How can you choose the mental health treatment center that’s right for you?

When you’re looking for inpatient or outpatient mental health treatment in Seattle, you’ll want to consider what will benefit you the most. Will you thrive in an age-specific, residential program, or gender-specific IOP treatment for depression? Do the treatment centers you’re considering help with your specific mental health concerns, and do they offer a holistic, robust treatment program that includes therapy modalities like dialectical behavior therapy?
