When your teen is really struggling, when they’re experiencing mental health symptoms that don’t seem responsive to a once-a-week outpatient therapy session, as a parent, you have a lot to consider.

• Should your teen continue with the inadequate treatment, with the hope that things will improve with time?
• Should you try to coordinate multiple appointments a week with experts like psychiatrists and nutritionists, and hope that helps?
• What about the isolation your teen seems to be dealing with? Will a few appointments with adults be enough to help them feel less alone?
• Do you have the knowledge you need to help your teen, and if not, where can you learn what you need to know?

DBT-based teen residential treatment can help your teen heal, quickly

When your teen’s mental health symptoms seriously impact their quality of life, taking your time to see if outpatient treatment can help is not an option. It’s time for a higher level of care than outpatient therapy. Teen residential treatment in Bellevue can be the answer your family is looking for.

In residential treatment, your teen will have access to 24/7 support, keeping them safe and helping them stay on track. They’ll have access to structured, personalized care that incorporates dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), expressive arts therapy, mindful movement, nutritional support, and more, healing them in body and mind, all in a welcoming space where they can live and heal, alongside their peers.

What are some signs that a teen would benefit from residential mental health treatment?

• Serious disruptions to relationships, including fights, abruptly ending relationships, social anxiety, or other interpersonal challenges
• Mood swings, irritability, anger, or extended emotional responses to stress
• Chronic Insomnia or oversleepiness
• Chronic feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, fear, worry
• Inability to sit still, rapid talking, easily distracted, can’t make decisions
• Experiencing flashbacks, nightmares, or chronic fear from traumatic experiences
• Isolation, avoidance, silence, and disinterest in people and activities they used to enjoy
• Disruptive or dangerous impulsive behavior
• Sudden changes in mental health symptoms
• Eating disorder symptoms (food restrictions, bingeing, purging, excess exercise)
• Self-harm (cutting, burning, bruising, impulsive behaviors)
• Suicidal thoughts or plans to attempt suicide

How does residential mental health treatment help teens heal more quickly than outpatient therapy?

Holistic residential mental health treatment makes a treatment plan easier to manage

When your teen is in crisis, and their mental health is disrupting daily life (possibly even endangering them), your teen needs multiple experts, now. Instead of trying to find, secure appointments with, and juggle time with a:

• Psychiatrist
• DBT therapist for teens
• Medical doctor
• Nutritionist
• Yoga teacher
• Art therapist
• Family and friends for healthy social support

Residential mental health care provides all of this and more for your teen, in one place.

Residential care also makes it easy to establish and coordinate a comprehensive personalized treatment plan. Your teen is unique; they have their own needs, values, and life goals, and their mental health treatment needs to reflect that. They also need a plan as soon as possible. With residential care, their treatment team can get to know them quickly, can develop a plan, and can get your teen started right away with support from multiple experts, their peers, and even their family.

Community healing makes teen mental health treatment feel more relatable

It can be embarrassing, confusing, or just plain difficult for a teen to feel comfortable opening up to only adults, but it can be hard to talk to friends, too, if they don’t “get it”, or your teen fears they’ll be rejected for being “weird” or “crazy”. It’s understandable if your teen feels this way, and community healing with other teens can make it feel less strange.

In residential teen mental health treatment, your teen isn’t only engaging with adults. They’ll live, eat, socialize, and have DBT-based skills group therapy with other teens, just like them. These teens all know they’re in treatment for the same reason, and they’ll be more understanding than some other peers your teen might know.

They’ll also all work together to learn crucial DBT skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation, so they can better manage their mental health.  Teens look to other teens to know what to do and how to navigate the world. In residential treatment, they can make friends, they can confide in each other, they can practice DBT for teens together, they can challenge each other in a safe environment, and they can cheer each other on in their therapy successes.

Fewer distractions, and fewer triggers, supports rapid healing

The world of teens is full of distractions, pressures, and triggers, all of which can make focusing on mental health and using DBT skills to cope, difficult at first, especially for a teen who is dealing with severe dysregulation.

Residential treatment places your teen in a calmer, more supportive environment. They aren’t cut off from the outside world, but they are immersed in a space where they can focus on their mental health most of the day, and have access to constructive, expert help when they need it. Your teen will have plenty of DBT skill practice by the time they’ve completed teen residential treatment, making it easier for them to face the same triggers and pressures that were dysregulating them so profoundly before they entered treatment.

Integrated family support means residential treatment success can be extended after treatment ends

Your teen will be returning home after treatment with a whole new set of life skills, but they’ll need reminders and practice to keep using them. This means you will need to understand and use DBT for teens at home.

A quality DBT-based teen residential treatment program will always include family support. You’ll be guided on what your teen is learning and how you can use DBT in the home as well. You’ll be given the knowledge you need to support your teen, and you and your teen can return home knowing you’ll be working as a team. Family inclusion creates an opportunity to strengthen family bonds, letting your teen know that you’re there for them, every step of the way.

Summer teen mental health treatment options mean no disruption to school schedules, and less social stigma

Teen residential mental health treatment includes time for school work and instruction, and we’ve created guides on how to handle disclosure and stigma against residential mental healthcare for teens.

That said, if your teen is resistant to pursuing the residential mental healthcare they need because they’re concerned about missing school, or they’re worried about facing social stigma and isolation because they’ll be in residential mental health treatment, summer treatment programs are a great option. Your teen won’t have to miss school, and they only have to discuss where they are with people they choose, while reaping all the benefits of residential treatment and equipping them to face the new school year with a suite of new life skills.
